The IDFA Bertha Fund (IBF) is officially opening doors for storytellers who dare to capture the world’s most pressing realities through the lens of creative documentary filmmaking.
For over two decades, this initiative has remained a cornerstone for the industry, serving as one of the few international funds dedicated to supporting documentary talent from the Global South and Eastern Europe.
By providing critical financial backing and professional guidance, the fund seeks to amplify marginalized voices and ensure that diverse perspectives reach the global stage.
Funding and Benefits
Selected projects can receive specialized grants tailored to various stages of the filmmaking process; from initial project development to final post-production.
The maximum contribution per project is €7,500, including for project development, which supports directors in their research, writing and/or production of visual material for the project presentation.
Beyond direct financial aid, the IBF offers a “more than money” approach, granting recipients customized advice, mentoring, and unparalleled access to the prestigious IDFA network and its professional markets.
Eligibility
The IDFA Bertha Fund is specifically designed for filmmakers who are nationals of and live in countries on the IBF list of eligible nations, which includes regions in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and parts of Eastern Europe.
Priority is given to creative documentaries that demonstrate a strong cinematic vision and have the potential to resonate with both local and international audiences.
Application requirement
Prospective applicants must submit a comprehensive digital dossier, including a detailed project proposal, a realistic production budget, and a visual treatment that reflects their unique directorial style.
Depending on the specific funding category, filmmakers may also be required to provide supporting audio-visual materials, such as a rough cut or samples of previous work, to demonstrate the project’s artistic merit.
Deadline
The deadline for this application is February 10, 2026. Visit the IDFA Bertha Fund website to apply. Explore more global calls on our Opportunities page.
