The Folger Institute has officially opened applications for its Artistic Research Fellowships for the 2026-2027 academic year.

These fellowships are designed to support individuals whose work enriches the collective understanding of the early modern world.

The Institute prioritizes research that tackles difficult historical questions by engaging deeply with primary sources.

Fellows join a high-powered, multidisciplinary community of inquiry that spans various fields. While projects vary in expression, researchers are united by interests in the literature, art, performance and politics of the early modern era.

Funding and benefits

Financial support for the program is structured by the nature of the residency, offering $4,000 per virtual month and $5,000 per onsite month. These awards can be utilized at any time between July 1, 2026, and June 30, 2027.

Beyond funding, fellows gain access to the Folger’s vast collections, which include rare materials, theatre history and secondary publications.

Remote researchers can also utilize the Digital Image Collection and the Virtual Reading Room for undigitized materials.

The fellowship further provides professional growth through networking opportunities with Folger curators, librarians and theatre professionals. Participants also receive discounted performance tickets and J1 Visa sponsorship if required.

Application requirements

The call is open to all artists whose work relates to the history, concepts, or objects of the early modern world (ca. 1400-1800). While a formal degree is not required, applicants should detail their industry-specific experience in their curriculum vitae.

To apply, candidates must submit a 250-word abstract and a 1,500-word project description. This description should emphasize the project’s impact, feasibility, and a preliminary plan for how the work will be shared with the public.

Additional requirements include a two-page CV, a list of specific Folger sources to be consulted, and one letter of recommendation. Optional portfolio materials or links may also be included if they help the committee understand the proposed project.

Deadline

Interested artists must submit their full applications through the online portal to be considered for this cycle. All materials must be received by the January 15, 2026 deadline. Click here to apply. Explore more global calls on our Opportunities page.
