The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has opened its doors to a new cohort of international specialists for the 2026/2027 academic year.
This program targets professionals from developing and newly industrialized nations to foster global sustainable development through advanced academic training.
By providing high-level education in Germany, the initiative aims to build a robust network of local experts capable of leading their home countries toward a future defined by reduced poverty and improved healthcare.
The scholarship supports a wide array of postgraduate and master’s degree programs at state-recognized German universities for durations ranging from 12 to 42 months. In exceptional cases, the funding may also be extended to support those pursuing a doctoral qualification.
Funding and benefits
Selected scholars will receive significant financial support, including monthly payments of €992 for graduates or €1,300 for doctoral candidates. Notably, the stipend for doctoral students is scheduled to increase to €1,400 beginning in February 2026.
Beyond the basic stipend, the scholarship provides critical coverage for health, accident, and personal liability insurance.
It also includes a travel allowance to assist with relocation costs, provided these expenses are not already covered by the student’s home country or other funding sources.
Under specific circumstances, the German Academic Exchange Service offers additional financial cushions such as a monthly rent subsidy. Furthermore, scholars who are accompanied by their families may be eligible for a monthly allowance for family members to help manage living costs in Germany.
Application requirements
A primary requirement for all applicants is having at least two years of relevant professional experience following their first degree.
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree, typically earned through a four-year course, and demonstrate above-average academic results.
Beyond academic merit, the program seeks candidates with a clear development-related motivation. Prospective scholars must demonstrate a commitment to taking on social responsibility and an ability to initiate and support processes of change in their professional environments after graduation.
Deadline
Prospective students should be aware that application deadlines vary depending on the specific postgraduate study program chosen.
