The BBVA Foundation has opened the call for the 19th edition of its Frontiers of Knowledge Awards, a global initiative designed to celebrate world-class research and singular artistic creation.

These awards recognize contributions that significantly expand the “frontiers of the known world” while fostering the overlap of diverse disciplinary fields.

The BBVA Group views innovation and knowledge as essential drivers for value creation in plural societies.

The scheme specifically prizes work that demonstrates exceptional originality and significance across the global knowledge map.

This year’s competition covers eight distinct categories, ranging from basic sciences and biology to information and communication technologies.

Additional honors will be granted in climate change, economics, social sciences, humanities, and music and opera.

Prizes and benefits

Each of the eight Frontiers of Knowledge categories carries a significant monetary prize of 400,000 euros.

In cases where an award is shared by a team, this amount is divided equally among all designated recipients.

Beyond the financial endowment, winners receive a diploma and a commemorative artwork to mark their achievement.

Laureates are also invited to a formal presentation ceremony and gala concert held in Bilbao, Spain during June 2027.

Application requirement

The nomination process is strictly indirect, meaning self-nomination is prohibited under the program’s official conditions.

Candidates must be put forward by scientific or cultural organizations, such as university departments, research centers, or orchestras.

Eligibility is broad, extending to one or more natural persons of any nationality or scientific and cultural organizations with exceptional records.

Notably, past Frontiers of Knowledge Awards winners and Nobel Prize laureates are also invited to submit nominations.

All submissions must be completed in English through the foundation’s official website. Required documentation includes a letter of nomination, the candidate’s curriculum vitae, and a detailed three-page description of their salient contributions.

Deadline

The nomination window opens on January 1, 2026 providing a six-month period for institutions to prepare their entries. All materials must be submitted no later than June 30, 2026 at 16:00 GMT. Visit BBVA Foundation website to apply. Explore more global calls on our Opportunities page.
