The Elinor Ostrom Fellowship is a one-year, competitive fellowship program awarded to PhD students from any university and any discipline, including economics, philosophy, political science, and sociology.

The fellowship aims to expose students to themes of markets, culture, morality, and sociality within the Austrian, Virginia, and Bloomington schools of political economy.

Funding and benefits

The total award of up to $7,000 includes a stipend, required readings, and travel and lodging to attend colloquia hosted by the Mercatus Center.

To qualify, applicants must be enrolled in an accredited PhD program during the 2026-2027 academic year and able to commit to traveling 3 weekends for colloquia.

Requirements

Submit the following:

  • – A 1-2 page cover letter explaining graduate school career, research interests, and how the fellowship will support scholarly development
  • – A current resume/CV
  • – Responses to short-answer questions
