The Leprosy Research Initiative (LRI) has officially launched its flagship call for proposals, seeking innovative research projects set to begin in 2027.

This global initiative focuses on leprosy and other neglected tropical diseases that share cross-cutting challenges with the condition.

The LRI is prioritizing studies that offer results directly applicable to leprosy services or improve the overall well-being of affected individuals.

This round of funding aims to bridge the gap between clinical scientific investigation and practical health system strengthening in high-burden areas.

Funding and benefits

Funded projects typically receive an average of €30,000 annually. Depending on the scope, awards generally range from €10,000 to €75,000 per year, though the committee may consider higher budgets for exceptional cases.

Successful applicants will be granted a maximum project duration of four years (48 months) to complete their research and follow-up activities. This long-term support is designed to facilitate robust data collection and surveillance post-treatment.

Application requirement

Eligible researchers must ensure their study aligns with LRI priority areas, with a current preference for work regarding nerve function impairment and reactions.

This includes operational research on diagnosis, the assessment of new drug regimens, and the biological mechanisms behind leprosy reactions.

The LRI strongly encourages applications from, or in close collaboration with, institutions and organizations based in endemic countries. To maintain a standardized review process, all submitted proposals and supporting documents must be written in English.

The application process begins with the submission of a Letter of Intent (LoI) via the official LRI grant application portal, outlining intended methodology and goals.

Deadlines

The window for submitting the Letter of Intent will close promptly on January 23, 2026, at 17:00 CET. Following a screening by the LRI Steering Committee, applicants will be notified of their status by March 13, 2026.

Researchers who receive a positive outcome will then be invited to submit a full proposal by the May 4, 2026, deadline. This secondary stage involves independent peer reviews and an opportunity for applicants to provide a rebuttal to reviewer feedback by late August.

The final funding decisions for the 2027 budget round will be officially communicated to all candidates by mid-December 2026. This rigorous selection process ensures that the most impactful research is identified and supported to advance global health.
