The African Fellowships for Research in Indigenous and Alternative Knowledges (AFRIAK) is a flagship initiative of CODESRIA, designed to support young African scholars working at the intersection of academic research and community-based knowledge systems.

The fellowship recognises the value of Indigenous and alternative knowledges in shaping development pathways, cultural identity and social transformation across Africa.

Programme aim

AFRIAK seeks to nurture a new generation of researchers whose work centres Indigenous and alternative knowledge systems.

The programme prioritises research that moves beyond theory to engage directly with communities, traditions, and lived experiences, while contributing to broader scholarly and policy debates on development, identity and social change.

Benefits

The fellowship runs for seven months, combining research support, mentorship and collaborative learning.

Fellows take part in an induction workshop, supervised fieldwork, a virtual mid-term institute and a residency at an intellectual hub outside their home country. This structure promotes regional exchange, peer learning and strong linkages between academic research and community practice.

Who can apply

The fellowship is open to African nationals aged 35 and below who live and work on the continent.

Eligible applicants include early-career researchers, practitioners, and knowledge holders applying Indigenous approaches in academic or community-based contexts. Group applications of three to five members are also welcome.

CODESRIA strongly encourages applications from women and persons with disabilities, with a target of at least 70% female participation.

Eligible applicants include:

  • Researchers based in universities or research institutions.

  • Practitioners working with Indigenous or local knowledge systems.

  • Knowledge holders applying Indigenous methods in community contexts.

  • Groups of 3–5 applicants, with at least 70% women.

Application requirements

Applicants must submit a structured concept note outlining their research focus, methodology and expected outcomes, alongside a curriculum vitae and two signed reference letters.

Group applications must include documentation for all members and a joint concept note. All applicants must meet the eligibility criteria and demonstrate strong alignment with the fellowship’s objectives.

Deadline

The closing date is February 15, 2026. Interested candidates should apply via the CODESRIA website.
