The Harry Frank Guggenheim African Fellow Awards recognise emerging African PhD scholars whose work examines violence and aggression linked directly to the African continent.
The fellowship supports research that deepens understanding of why violence occurs and how it can be reduced through effective policy, practice and evidence-based interventions.
Focus areas
The programme welcomes research addressing a broad range of violence-related issues, including war, crime, terrorism, political extremism, family and intimate-partner violence, climate-related conflict, and ethnic or religious tensions.
While applications from multiple disciplines are encouraged, priority is given to research that addresses urgent real-world challenges and offers practical insights relevant to violence prevention and reduction.
Fellowship offerings
Each selected fellow receives a USD 10,000 fieldwork research grant, along with mentorship from senior African and Africanist scholars.
Additional benefits include sponsorship to present research findings at an international conference, participation in writing workshops, and editorial support aimed at publishing in peer-reviewed academic journals.
