The Mercatus Center has opened applications for the Frédéric Bastiat Fellowship, a global programme for graduate students with a strong interest in political economy and public policy.

It brings together students from diverse disciplines and countries to examine how economic ideas influence real-world policy debates and governance outcomes.

Focus

The fellowship introduces participants to the Austrian, Virginia and Bloomington schools of political economy—key intellectual traditions that shape contemporary policy thinking.

Rather than treating these schools as abstract theories, the programme presents them as practical frameworks for analysing modern policy challenges, academic research and applied work across sectors.

Learning environment and academic network

Beyond structured seminars, fellows become part of a broader intellectual community of Mercatus scholars, alumni and researchers.

This network promotes long-term collaboration, mentorship, and continued exchange of ideas, supporting participants’ academic development and policy engagement well beyond the fellowship period.

Funding details

The fellowship offers financial support of up to USD $5,000, covering:

  • A stipend.

  • Required reading materials.

  • Full travel and accommodation costs for Mercatus-hosted colloquia.

This support enables fellows to participate fully without personal financial burden.

Who can apply

The programme is open to graduate students worldwide. Eligible applicants include students enrolled in:

  • Master’s degree programmes.

  • Juris Doctor (JD) programmes.

  • Doctoral programmes.

Candidates may come from economics, law, political science, public policy or any discipline with a demonstrated interest in political economy.

Deadline

Interested candidates can apply via the Mercatus Center website not later than March 15, 2026.
