The Urban Studies Foundation (USF) has launched a new research grant initiative focused on urban urgencies.
The Urban Urgencies theme addresses the complex crises shaping cities today, including climate change, housing and food insecurity, public health threats, conflict, technology shifts, and democratic pressures.
Rather than setting a fixed topic, the Urban Studies Foundation says the call recognizes that urgency differs by context.
Proposals are expected to connect evidence, theory, and practice and to challenge existing understandings of how urban change unfolds.
Funding and benefits
The Urban Studies Foundation will fund up to six projects, with each award offering up to US $44,500.
Projects are expected to begin within nine months of the application deadline and may run for a maximum of 18 months.
Funding is intended to support focused, high-impact research rather than long-term programmes.
Proposal requirements
All proposals must sit clearly within the field of urban studies and make a strong scholarly contribution.
A core requirement is meaningful collaboration between academic and non-academic partners, with joint involvement in research design, knowledge production, and dissemination.
Projects should be innovative in both approach and method, and capable of generating new empirical evidence.
Who can apply for the Urban Studies Foundation’s grant?
This is a grant application open to small, clearly defined research teams.
Eligible proposals must include:
- A team of 2–3 co-applicants
- At least one academic and one non-academic organisation
- Secure employment arrangements for all team members
- Strong, documented partnerships supported by formal letters
- A host public or non-profit organisation able to manage grant funds
