The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), with funding from the European Union, has opened the 2025 call for proposals under its Biodiversity Information for Development (BID) programme.

The Biodiversity Information programme grant focuses on closing biodiversity data gaps and improving access to existing data through GBIF.

Supported projects are expected to strengthen institutional capacity, promote the use of biodiversity data in research and policy, and support the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

A strong emphasis is placed on collaboration, open data sharing, and long-term sustainability.

Funding and benefits

Two grant categories are available under this call.

  • Regional biodiversity data mobilization grants provide up to $97,000 for projects lasting 24 months.
  • Cross-regional biodiversity data mobilization grants offer up to $130,000 over the same period.

Funding supports data mobilization, skills mobility, capacity building, and partnerships that address shared biodiversity priorities.

Programme expectations

Funded projects are expected to mobilize biodiversity data, improve data quality and accessibility, and promote reuse for research and decision-making.

Proposals should show how activities will lead to measurable outcomes such as datasets published, institutions strengthened, or regional networks established.

Projects should also demonstrate how they will contribute to sustainable communities of practice around biodiversity data.
