The South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) is inviting young postgraduate researchers across Africa to apply for its Africa Youth Portal and Research Programme.
The initiative aims to elevate youth perspectives in research and policy by providing practical training, mentorship and a platform to engage meaningfully in Africa’s development discourse.
Focus
The programme focuses on bridging the gap between academic research and real-world policy work. Participants will learn how to translate complex ideas into concise, impactful policy pieces.
Training sessions will cover:

Research communication and media engagement.

The use of AI and digital tools for research.

Personal branding and career guidance.
Training benefits
SAIIA will fully cover travel and accommodation for selected participants to ensure equal access to the programme.
A cohort of 20 young researchers will:

Receive hands-on training and personalised mentorship.

Publish their work on the Africa Youth Portal.

Build peer and expert networks.

Become eligible to join SAIIA’s Youth Advisory Committee, expanding their visibility and career prospects.
Who’s it for?
The programme is open to youth researchers (18–35 years) who are currently enrolled in or have recently completed a postgraduate programme in any of the following fields: Political Science, International Relations, Journalism, Development Studies, Sociology, Law, Economics, Science and Foresight Studies.
Applicants should demonstrate:

A strong interest in policy research and youth development.

Commitment to producing an 800–1000-word publishable research piece.
