Applications are now open for the 2026 round of the CLIFF-GRADS Programme, which offers PhD students from developing countries short-term overseas research placements focused on climate-smart agriculture.
The initiative provides advanced scientific training and opportunities for international collaboration, enabling young researchers to strengthen their skills while contributing to global efforts to reduce agricultural greenhouse gas emissions.
Focus areas
The programme supports research on the measurement, modelling, quantification and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, as well as carbon storage in agricultural systems.
Its overall goal is to deepen scientific expertise that strengthens climate resilience and food security, especially in regions where agriculture is most vulnerable to climate impacts.
Applicants are encouraged to design research that directly addresses agricultural challenges in developing countries.
Funding details
Selected candidates will receive USD 14,000 to cover travel, living costs, research activities, and academic needs.
Research placements typically last 4 to 6 months, with possible extensions if additional funding becomes available.
Participants gain hands-on experience, access to advanced research facilities and the opportunity to work closely with international experts.
Who can apply
The call is open to PhD candidates who:
-
are citizens of developing countries.
-
are enrolled in a PhD programme at a university in a developing country.
-
are conducting research related to greenhouse gas mitigation or carbon storage in agriculture.
-
have not previously received a CLIFF-GRADS grant.
The programme targets emerging scientists committed to building their research capacity.
Application requirements
Applicants must submit a research proposal clearly outlining their topic, methods and expected outcomes. Required documents may include:
-
Proof of PhD enrollment
-
Endorsement from a supervisor
-
Academic transcripts or records
-
A motivation statement
Proposals should clearly demonstrate how the research contributes to climate-mitigation goals.
Deadline
Interested candidates can visit the GRA website to learn how to apply. Applications end on January 11, 2026.
