The Akwa Ibom State Government is now accepting applications for its Homegrown Agriculture Awards, a programme designed to celebrate residents who strengthen food security through farming at home, in schools or within their communities.
Aim
The initiative encourages residents to grow crops or raise fish using any available space—backyards, small plots, school grounds or improvised farm areas.
Its goal is to make farming an everyday practice, boost household food availability and promote a culture where everyone contributes to agricultural development.
Who can apply
The awards are open to a diverse group of residents actively contributing to local food production, including:
-
Home Farmers growing cassava, maize, yam, vegetables, and other staples
-
Fish Farmers running small or large fishponds around their homes
-
Youth Farmers building small agricultural ventures within their living environment
-
School Farm Managers, including teachers and students involved in school-based crop or fish production
These categories ensure that individuals, families and institutions all have a pathway to participate.
Benefits
Selected participants will receive formal recognition from the state government—an endorsement that elevates their work, enhances visibility and encourages continued community farming.
Eligibility criteria
Applicants must:
-
Be residents of Akwa Ibom State.
-
Be actively involved in home-, school- or youth-based farming.
-

-

-
Provide documentation or a description of their farming space and output.
