The Centre for Advanced Study (CAS) Sofia has opened applications for its Social Relevance of the Humanities Fellowship, a programme designed to spotlight the enduring importance of humanities research in an increasingly complex and fast-changing world.

Focus

The fellowship encourages scholars to revisit their research through questions that shape contemporary life—political, ethical, religious, philosophical and beyond.

CAS Sofia seeks humanities and social science projects that engage pressing present-day issues while maintaining strong academic rigour. The programme aims to demonstrate how critical inquiry in these fields can illuminate human experiences shaped by technological transformation and digital modernity.

Benefits

Selected fellows will spend up to five months in residence in Sofia, receiving:

  • A monthly stipend of $1,000.

  • Accommodation.

  • Full access to library and digital resources.

  • Additional allowances covering travel, insurance, visa costs, research trips abroad and monthly research expenses.

Fellows may opt for either the winter semester (October 2026 – February 2027) or the summer semester (March – July 2027), depending on their project needs.

Who can apply

The fellowship is open to postdoctoral scholars in the humanities or social sciences based outside Bulgaria. Both junior and senior researchers are encouraged to apply. Evaluation will prioritise strong academic records, innovative ideas and the relevance of proposed research.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Non-Bulgarian citizenship.

  • A PhD in a humanities or social science discipline.

  • Evidence of international research experience (preferred).

  • Publications in peer-reviewed outlets.

  • Strong proficiency in English.

  • For junior scholars (within eight years of PhD): two recommendation letters

Requirements

Applicants must submit a detailed research proposal outlining the project’s significance, expected contribution and justification for the proposed fellowship duration.

Junior applicants must also arrange for referees to send recommendation letters directly to CAS Sofia.

All proposals should clearly show how the research engages contemporary debates and reflects interdisciplinary or comparative perspectives.

Deadline

Applications close on March 31, 2026. Applicants should visit the CAS Sofia website to apply.
