The Hillman Prize is now accepting submissions for its 2026 competition, inviting journalists worldwide to enter their most impactful work that reached, or was widely accessible to, U.S. audiences.

Renowned for honouring journalism that advances social and economic justice, the award celebrates reporting that sparks public dialogue and holds power to account.

The prize seeks work that demonstrates strong reporting, fairness and deep public value. Entries should show how journalism can expose wrongdoing, illuminate inequality or drive essential policy debates.

All submissions are also considered for the SEIU Award for Reporting on Racial and Economic Justice, underscoring the programme’s commitment to coverage that amplifies marginalised voices.

Categories

The 2026 awards feature the following entry categories:
• Book (nonfiction)
• Newspaper Journalism
• Magazine Journalism
• Broadcast Journalism (radio, TV or podcasts)
• Opinion & Analysis Journalism

Entrants from digital-only outlets may choose between the Newspaper or Magazine categories. Each piece may be submitted only once, though the organisers may reassign categories if needed.

Funding

Winners in each category receive a $5,000 honorarium and a certificate.

They will also be honoured at the annual awards ceremony in New York City on May 5, 2026—an event that offers high-level industry visibility and recognition from one of the United States’ most respected journalism foundations.
