The Human-Rights Essay Award is now accepting submissions for its 2026 edition, offering legal scholars an opportunity to contribute fresh research on international human-rights law.
This year’s competition centres on the right to protest, a freedom increasingly threatened by state actions around the world. The award seeks to encourage strong academic writing that can advance global understanding of this urgent issue.
Essay theme
The 2026 theme is “The right to protest under international human-rights law: legal protection and challenges ahead.”
Participants are invited to examine the growing use of disproportionate restrictions, surveillance, and excessive force by states.
The goal is to highlight existing legal protections, expose the gaps between international norms and state practice and explore how domestic laws interact with international obligations.
Benefits
Winners receive special recognition and the opportunity to have their essays published in the American University International Law Review, a respected journal with a highly selective review process.
The top two essays, along with up to four honourable mentions, may be featured—providing international visibility and valuable career advancement for participants. Publication also opens doors to wider academic engagement and collaboration.
Who can apply
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
● Hold a law degree such as a JD, LLB, or an equivalent qualification.
● Have proven experience or demonstrated interest in international human-rights law.
● Be capable of submitting a well-referenced academic legal article.
● Choose a topic that aligns with the 2026 theme.
Requirements
Essays must be original, well structured and supported by credible sources.
Participants may explore the theme from any legal angle, including national legislation, criminal law, redress mechanisms or the motives behind state restrictions. Submissions must follow academic formatting and demonstrate clear legal reasoning.
The academy may move the programme online if exceptional circumstances arise.
