Gulbenkian Foundation is funding global research into Portugal’s culture

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation has opened applications for its Gulbenkian Research Scholarships, inviting non-Portuguese researchers residing abroad to conduct advanced research in Portugal on topics related to Portuguese culture within the Humanities.

Focus

The programme supports advanced research in History, Art History and Literature, with a focus on projects that expand international appreciation of Portuguese cultural identity and its global influence.

Grantees may use the scholarship to produce doctoral theses, academic articles or other scholarly publications that highlight Portugal’s contributions to the humanities.

Funding details

Successful applicants will receive:

  • A monthly stipend of $1,338 for doctoral students or $2,140 for senior researchers

  • A travel and installation grant of $1,070

  • Personal accident insurance for the duration of their stay in Portugal

Scholarships are non-renewable and awarded for a minimum of two months and a maximum of ten months, to be undertaken during the 2026/2027 academic year.

Eligibility

The programme is open to non-Portuguese nationals living outside Portugal who wish to carry out research in the country.

Applicants must:

  • Be doctoral students or senior researchers in the Humanities

  • Focus their research on Portuguese history, art or literature

  • Be affiliated with a Portuguese academic or research institution

  • Submit all required documents and meet the Foundation’s eligibility and legal conditions

Application Requirements

Applications must be submitted online via MyGulbenkian and include the following:

  • Academic certificates

  • Curriculum Vitae

  • Structured research plan

  • Proof of institutional affiliation or project approval

  • Supervisor’s approval letter (for doctoral students)

  • Motivation letter explaining the research’s relevance and potential career impact

Evaluation criteria

Candidates will be evaluated based on:

  • Academic background and research experience

  • Quality, originality, and feasibility of the proposed study

  • Motivation and institutional endorsement

A jury appointed by the Foundation’s Executive Board will review all submissions, and final decisions—made by the Board—are final and not subject to appeal.
