More often than not, people assume that those with darker skin don’t need sunscreen. But this is misleading. While melanin provides some natural protection, it’s not enough to prevent sun damage. In tropical countries like Nigeria, dermatologists maintain that sunscreens should be a part of everyone’s skincare routine.

The case for sunscreens

Without proper sun protection, your skin is at risk of several problems, such as hyperpigmentation and cancer. Dark-skinned individuals are typically more prone to hyperpigmentation and dark spots, which can worsen with prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Roughly 80% of visible skin ageing results from UV exposure. Sunscreens serve as a barrier, helping prevent fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin caused by the sun’s rays.

Both UVA (which causes skin ageing) and UVB (which causes sunburn) contribute to skin cancer. Using sunscreens daily protects your skin from these harmful rays, lowering the long-term risk.

White cast challenges

One of the biggest concerns for people with melanin-rich skin is the white or greyish residue after applying some sunscreens.

This primarily occurs because traditional products often contain mineral filters like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which sit on the skin’s surface to reflect UV light. While effective, these ingredients can leave a noticeable white film or darker skin tones.

Fortunately, modern cosmetic formulations have evolved. Many brands now use micronised or tinted mineral particles that blend into darker complexions, thereby erasing the white cast problem.

Making your choice

Here’s what to consider when shopping for the right product for your skin:

Chemical sunscreens are less likely to leave a white cast because they absorb UV radiation instead of reflecting it.

Similarly, modern physical sunscreens use ultra-fine particles of zinc oxide that disappear into the skin effortlessly.

Generally opt for products that are labelled ‘clear’, ‘fluid’ or ‘gel-like’. These tend to blend well on darker skin complexions without residue.

For those in mostly hot and humid climates, look for products with protection power against UVA and UVB rays. These especially shield the skin from early ageing.

Different sunscreens abound for different skin types. For oily and acne-prone skin, products with a matte finish—which do not clog pores—are highly recommended. They contain ingredients like niacinamide, which controls excessive oil.

Fragrance-free options are best for dry or sensitive skin, as they contain Centella Asiatica or hyaluronic acid, which reduces skin irritation with a deep-moisturising effect.

Application tips

To get the most from your sunscreen, reapply every 2 to 3 hours, especially when outdoors.

Use enough product on your face. Consider formulas that contain antioxidants like Naturium UV Reflect Antioxidant SPF 50, which also shields against blue light from electronic gadgets.

Bottom line

The right sunscreen helps you maintain an even-toned and healthy skin—free from white cast or irritation. Regardless of the climate, consistent sun protection is essential. For every shade of melanin, there’s a sunscreen formula to match.
