The West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) has opened applications for its Innovative Ideas Competition for Sustainable Energy (WISE), inviting forward-thinking individuals and organizations to submit impactful projects on renewable energy and green hydrogen.

The initiative seeks to promote sustainable energy solutions across West Africa, from local to regional levels.

The ideas competition aims to advance renewable energy access and green hydrogen innovation, addressing energy challenges while promoting sustainable growth.

Its focus areas include renewable energy solutions, green mobility, biomass recovery, productive use of renewables, and women’s empowerment in the energy sector.

Projects that foster electricity access, rural development, and climate-friendly solutions are especially encouraged.

Funding and benefits

 Each winning idea will receive up to $23,000 in grant funding for a project lasting no more than 15 months.

The grant covers operational costs, travel, training, and essential goods and services directly tied to implementation.

Funded projects will gain visibility through WASCAL’s regional platforms and contribute to shaping sustainable energy strategies in West Africa.

Who can apply for the ideas competition?

 Applications fort the ideas competition are open to:

  • Individuals, groups, or legally registered associations from WASCAL’s West African member countries
  • Innovators with ideas related to renewable energy or green hydrogen
  • Projects proposing products, services, business models, or research studies
  • Applicants able to execute activities within 15 months and provide clear implementation plans

Application requirements

 Proposals must include detailed descriptions of the project’s objectives, expected impact, innovation potential, and budget outline.

Submissions should be in PDF format, written in English or French, and demonstrate measurable benefits for communities or the environment.

Applicants are advised to apply early to ensure smooth submission.

Selection process and monitoring

Entries will be screened for eligibility before undergoing technical and financial evaluation by independent experts.

Criteria include relevance, innovation, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness.

Selected applicants will be invited to a clarification meeting, followed by official award notifications and participation in a launch ceremony organized by WASCAL.
