Applications still open for Nigerian Army Short Service intake

The online application for the Nigerian Army’s Short Service Combatant, or SSC Course, 49/2026 is still open.

Application details
The Short Service Combatant cadre, which will officially close on November 12, 2025, covers only the Combat Arms (Infantry and Armour Corps) and Combat Support Arms (Artillery, Engineers, Signals, and Intelligence Corps). Interested candidates can submit their applications via the recruitment portal.

Commissioning
Successful applicants will undergo 44 weeks of intensive military training at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Jaji, after which they will be commissioned as Lieutenants. 

Who can apply
Applicants must:

  • Be Nigerian citizens by birth, aged between 23 and 27 years as of January 9, 2026.
  • Hold at least a Bachelor’s Degree or Higher National Diploma with a minimum of Second Class Lower or Lower Credit.
  • Be medically, mentally and physically fit by Nigerian Army standards.
  • Have no criminal record or pending court case.
  • Maintain minimum heights of 1.68m for men and 1.65m for women.
  • Provide two letters of attestation from referees, as well as valid supporting documents (birth, origin, and NYSC certificate or exemption letter). 

How to apply

  1. Visit the recruitment portal.
  2. Choose a short service combatant course and then submit an online application form.
  3. Upload all required documents, such as a passport photo, degree certificate, NYSC certificate, birth certificate and NIN slip.
  4. Print out the application form, photo slip, guarantor’s form, and attestation form to be presented during screening.

Screening details
Nationwide screening begins on November 24, 2025, at 14 designated centres. Only shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews and physical tests. 

Terms of service
The SSC is a 15-year commission, with 10 years of active service and a possible 5-year extension. Outstanding officers may later be considered for the Regular Combatant Commission.
