The FREE STEM Fund has opened a new round of funding to support organisations and groups advancing gender equity in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The initiative focuses on expanding opportunities for girls and young women aged 12 to 35—especially those from under-represented or marginalised backgrounds—to participate and lead in STEM-related fields.

Aim

The fund is designed to close the gender gap in STEM by backing community-driven initiatives that promote inclusion, representation, and equity.

It particularly supports projects that empower women, transgender, and non-binary individuals, as well as Black, Indigenous, and people of colour, refugees, migrants, LGBTIQ+ persons, people with disabilities, and those in remote or underserved areas.

Funding details

The FREE STEM Fund offers two main grant models:

● The AtoM Model provides between €15,000 and €20,000 over two years for smaller or emerging groups testing new approaches to gender equity in STEM.
● The Molecule Model offers up to €50,000 over two years for established organisations with at least two years of experience in STEM and gender equity or three years in STEM education.

Grantees also gain visibility, access to professional networks and capacity-building opportunities to enhance their long-term impact.

Who can apply

Applications are open to registered and unregistered organisations, collectives and community initiatives that meet the following criteria:

● Have at least three members.
● Demonstrate a clear commitment to advancing the participation of girls, women, transgender, or non-binary individuals in STEM.
● Align with one or more of the fund’s thematic priorities, especially education and training.
● Have an annual income not exceeding €150,000 (for 2024).
● Maintain at least 60% of leadership positions held by women, transgender or non-binary people.

Preference will be given to groups that are women-led, transgender-led or non-binary-led, ensuring leadership reflects the communities they serve.

Requirements

Applicants must submit a concise proposal outlining their project idea, objectives, target audience, and intended use of the funds to achieve measurable outcomes.

Unregistered organisations applying for more than €15,000 are required to work with a registered fiscal sponsor. All proposals should demonstrate inclusivity, sustainability and strong community engagement.

Deadline

Applications are due on December 1, 2025. Visit the official website to apply.
