The Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) is inviting research proposals that explore the health benefits of human-animal interactions and pet ownership.

This call focuses on studies that advance understanding in four key areas:

  • Child health and development

  • Healthy aging

  • Mental health and wellness

  • Physical health outcomes

The funding also prioritises research on animal-assisted interventions (AAI) that assess how pet ownership and interactions contribute to human well-being. Researchers are encouraged to review HABRI’s full documentation to identify specific scientific priorities for this funding round.

Funding details

HABRI typically funds five to six projects each year, with an average award of about $50,000 and a project duration of roughly 20 months.

The institute seeks projects that produce actionable insights for healthcare practitioners and policymakers and encourage exploration of emerging areas—such as therapy animal welfare—that remain under-researched.

Eligibility

Applications are open to international institutions and non-profit organisations engaged in relevant research. Proposals should aim to generate evidence that informs practical health or policy interventions.

Application requirements

Applicants must submit a comprehensive proposal that includes:

  • Research protocols

  • Budget narrative

  • Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval forms

The deadline for submissions is February 26, 2026. Interested applicants can visit the HABRI website for detailed submission procedures.
