Lloyd’s Register Foundation unveils £2.5 Million grant for heritage innovation

The Lloyd’s Register Foundation has announced an open call for proposals under its Heritage Grant Programme, offering up to £2.5 million in total funding for ambitious, high-impact projects that strengthen the global heritage sector.

Focus

The programme seeks to support initiatives that enhance research capacity, promote equity, improve safety standards, and expand public access to heritage resources.
Proposals should align with one or more of the Foundation’s core themes, including:

  • Maritime safety

  • Technological transitions in port and maritime industries

  • Recovery and recognition of previously obscured histories

The overarching goal is to explore how lessons from history can help create safer, more inclusive futures for all. The Foundation places particular emphasis on projects that focus on maritime and coastal heritage, linking past experiences with future-oriented policy and practice.

Funding 

A total of £2.5 million is available under this call, with individual grants ranging from £200,000 to £500,000 per project.

Funding may cover:

  • Research and partnership development

  • Public engagement and access initiatives

  • Capacity-building in heritage skills

  • Technology and digital innovation

  • Interpretation and collections access

  • Purchase of specialist, pre-approved equipment

Funds cannot be used for capital works, academic tuition fees, lobbying activities, or retrospective costs.

Who can apply

Applications are welcome from:

  • Academic and research institutions

  • Museums and cultural organisations

  • Civil society organisations

  • Private sector entities pursuing public-interest missions

The Foundation particularly encourages collaborative and scalable projects that strengthen sector-wide capacity and promote inclusive participation.

Application process

Interested applicants must create an account via Flexigrant on the Lloyd’s Register Foundation portal.
Once registered, applicants should submit a two-page concept note outlining:

  • The project idea

  • Proposed partners

  • Indicative budget

  • Alignment with the Foundation’s heritage themes

Concept notes will be evaluated based on eligibility, strategic fit, and potential impact.

Deadline

The deadline for submissions is 15 October 2025.
