The Japan Foundation has opened applications for its Cultural Exchange Programmes, designed to foster mutual understanding and collaboration between Japan and other countries through arts, culture and language initiatives.

The foundation continues to support a broad range of projects that promote Japanese art, cultural dialogue and international collaboration. Applicants should visit the official website for detailed guidelines.

Benefits

The grant provides partial financial support for projects implemented during FY2026, covering eligible expenses such as:

  • Packing and shipping costs (excluding insurance).

  • Catalogue production, including digital catalogues for international exhibitions (support proportional to the number of Japanese artists featured).

  • Travel expenses for invited or dispatched artists, curators and specialists (economy-class round-trip airfare).

Note: Costs related to preliminary research, installation, production, and artist fees are not covered under this grant.

Eligibility

The programme generally supports:

  • Cultural organisations, museums and educational institutions engaged in international cultural exchange.

  • Researchers, artists and professionals focused on Japanese culture or comparative studies.

  • Institutions organising exhibitions that introduce Japanese art and culture abroad.

Applicants should confirm full eligibility requirements and institutional conditions on the foundation’s website before submitting proposals.

Ineligible applicants:

  • Individuals or entities established by the Japanese government.

  • Institutions submitting multiple applications (only one per organisation is allowed).

  • Organisations that have received continuous support from the programme for the past three years, unless exceptional justification is provided.

Application Deadline

The closing date is December 2, 2025. Interested applicants can apply via the Japan Foundation website.
