Call for fellows ($80,000): Institute for Advanced Study wants to explore ‘platform’

The School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) is inviting scholars to apply for its residential fellowship for the 2025–2026 academic year.

This year’s program centers on the theme of “Platform,” encouraging researchers to investigate this concept from many different angles.

The Institute for Advance Study is looking for projects that explore platforms in all their forms, whether they are digital, political, scientific, or artistic in nature.

What are the benefits from the Institute for Advanced Study felloship?

The main goal of the fellowship is to bring together a diverse community of 15 to 18 scholars whose work can offer fresh perspectives on the theme.

The program is designed to create a space for deep intellectual exchange among fellows who will reside in Princeton for the academic year.

This environment allows for collaborative thinking and the development of new insights into how platforms structure modern life.

Fellows accepted into the program will receive significant support. The fellowship provides a stipend of up to $80,000 for the academic year, which runs from September 2025 to May 2026.

In addition to financial support, fellows are provided with residential housing, private offices, and access to excellent libraries to aid in their research. Participants are expected to live in Princeton during the fellowship to fully engage with the academic community.

Who can apply for the Institute for Advanced Study fellowship?

The fellowship is open to a wide range of individuals from various disciplines and career stages. To be considered for the Institute for Advanced Study fellowship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • They must hold a Ph.D. at the time they apply.
  • Applications are welcome from scholars in all fields of the social sciences and related disciplines.
  • The program encourages applications from both early-career scholars, such as assistant professors, and established senior scholars.
  • Individuals from outside of academia, including journalists, artists, and writers, are also encouraged to apply, provided they can show a high level of scholarly achievement.

How to apply

The application process is conducted entirely online. Candidates must submit a complete application package, which includes a curriculum vitae (CV), a research proposal of no more than 1,500 words, and one writing sample that is a maximum of 35 pages.

Three letters of reference are also required and must be submitted by the deadline.
