Applications are now open for the AACR June L. Biedler Prize, which honors professional journalists who produce outstanding work about cancer.

The aim of the cancer journalism prize is to show how important the media is in helping the public understand cancer, cancer research, cancer advocacy, and cancer policy.

The winner will receive a $5,000 cash award and a commemorative prize. The award will be presented during the AACR Annual Meeting 2026 in San Diego, held from April 17 to 22, 2026.

Journalists can submit their work in one of two categories: Print/Online (newspapers, magazines, multimedia) or Broadcast (television, radio, podcasts). Each entry can only be considered in one category.

The prize is open to professional journalists whose main audience is the general public. Entries must be original work published or broadcast between December 1, 2024, and November 30, 2025.

Submissions must be in English, or translated into English, and should clearly help the public understand more about cancer. While the award is for individuals, up to two co-contributors may share the award and each will receive a commemorative prize. Institutions and organizations cannot apply.

Judging criteria

  • The judges will look at how well the work educates the public, explains science accurately, shows creativity, and makes an impact.
  • They will also check the clarity of language, timeliness of the story, and whether the reporting highlights underrepresented issues.

When and how to apply

  •  Applications must be submitted online through AACR’s award platform. The deadline is December 8, 2025. Click HERE to begin.
