The Jack Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies is offering fellowships to support important research and writing about the Holocaust and related topics.

These fellowships give scholars time to live in Washington, DC, and use the Museum’s rich resources. It is a chance to focus deeply on your project while being part of a scholarly community.

Fellows can stay for two, four, or eight months. During this time, they will work on their research, write, and take part in academic programs.

Funding and other benefits

  • Each fellow receives $5,000 per month as a stipend.
  • In addition, there is a one-time travel stipend to cover roundtrip transportation to Washington, DC. Fellows must arrange and pay for their own housing and health insurance.
  • The program offers personal guidance through the Emerging Scholars Publications Program. This helps fellows strengthen their projects and prepare their work for publication.

  • Fellows will have access to the Museum’s extensive resources, including over 120 million pages of Holocaust documents, books in more than 60 languages, oral histories, photos, films, art, artifacts, survivor testimonies, and more than 200 million images from the ITS Digital Archive. Some collection materials, like objects and textiles, may have limited access due to resource constraints.

Who can apply?

  • The fellowship is open to scholars from all over the world

  • Scholars can be at any career level, including PhD candidates and independent researchers who are not currently linked to a university. The program especially encourages new scholars to apply.

  • Fellows cannot hold another funded fellowship at the same time. Previous Mandel Center fellows may reapply after seven years.

When and how to apply

Applications are open till November 15, 2025. The application must be completed online in English accompanied by a project proposal (up to 1,000 words) and a curriculum vitae summary. Letters of recommendation are not needed. Click HERE to begin.

Access to the Museum’s vast resources, comprising documents, books, oral histories, and more, enhances the research experience, although some materials may have limited accessibility.

Scholars at all career stages, including PhD candidates and independent researchers, are encouraged to apply, with an emphasis on supporting new scholars.

Candidates are prohibited from holding another funded fellowship simultaneously, and previous fellows may reapply after seven years.
