Applications are now open for the Getty Library Research Grants, which support a wide range of research pursuits.
The call for applications also comes with possible access to some other grants, including the Whitney and Lee Kaplan African American Visual Culture Collection Library Research Grant and the Anne Willan and Mark Cherniavsky Gastronomy Collection of Prints and Rare and Contemporary Books Library Research Grant.
Others are the Conservation Collection Library Research Grant, which supports research that utilizes the collection developed by the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI), and the Awards for Undergraduates grants, which target college/university students who have obtained or are earning a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in art history, architectural history, studio art, or a related discipline.
Funding details
The Library Research Grants will provide partial support for travel, lodging, and living expenses. Housing is not provided. In general, grants are awarded depending on the travel distance to be covered. The grants are given according to the following circumstances:

- Travel within California (must reside more than 80 miles away from the Getty Center): $1,500
- Travel outside California but within North America, including Canada and Mexico: $3,000
- International travel (outside of North America): $4,500
- The research period can occur any time between February 2, 2026, and December 18, 2026, and may range from 5 days to a maximum of 8 weeks.
Who and what projects qualify?
- Researchers from around the world and at any level can apply.
- Projects must relate to specific items in the library’s collections (consult the Getty Library Catalog).
- Projects focused solely on materials in the Getty Museum collections are not eligible.
- Projects that rely heavily on materials that are digitized require a compelling reason for viewing the original items, which can be explained in the application project proposal.
- Researchers who have been awarded a Getty Library Research Grant within the past 4 years are not eligible to apply.
The application requirements include submitting two letters of recommendation for an application to be considered complete.

Eligible applicants include global researchers at any career stage, focusing on the Getty Library's collections.
Projects must not center solely on Getty Museum materials. Projects relying on digitized materials should justify the need for examining original items in the proposal.
