The One World Media Fellowship is calling for applications. The fellowship supports and champions global journalism and documentary filmmaking.
Particularly, the yearly cohort-based fellowship selects talented fellows to receive mentoring, industry support, and funding to produce original stories from the global south.
They encourage submissions from underrepresented regions and groups, including people of colour, ethnic groups, women, LGBTQ+, and people with disabilities.
For the 2025 cohort, new funding patterns are being introduced as the fellowship grows, providing more tailored opportunities and giving a range of grants to support diverse projects.
Each fellow will receive a £1-3k reporting grant and be paired with a mentor.
Other benefits include access to workshops and events by industry experts, connection with global outlets, networking with like-minded fellows and alumni, and membership in the OWM community of storytellers.
Who can apply?
Mid-career filmmakers and journalists from the global south, with creative and engaging nonfiction stories about the global south, are particularly sought after.
These fellows will experiment and learn in a supportive environment. That experimentation could be building the next ambitious project, an investigation, or tackling a challenging topic.
In judging entries, the fellowship considers the integrity and creativity of proposed stories and the applicant’s ability to deliver.
Projects they are looking for?
- Projects in pre-production that tell engaging stories from low- and middle-income countries across the global south
- Non-fiction media across all platforms: film, print, audio, photojournalism, and multimedia
- Proposals where majority of the budget is in place or achievable in a short time-frame
- Projects that can be delivered within a year—10mins in film, 1500 words in print, 30 mins in audio/multimedia
- Stories strong enough to be published or broadcast in established media outlets. They are looking for genuine journalism or documentary and will fund media that could ultimately appear in existing newspapers, magazines, radio, TV channels, professional news websites, online platforms, etc.
Application requirements
- Ideal entries should be small-scale projects that can be delivered in a year. For documentary films, it could be less than 10 minutes or a 30-minute audio documentary.
- Human interest features of 1200-1500 words are preferred in print, typically a deep dive into a strong story.
- Longer reads are also considered if there is interest or an established relationship with a likely outlet.
