AU calls for research papers on gender equality and education in Africa

The African Union International Centre for Girls and Women’s Education in Africa (AU/CIEFFA) is inviting researchers to submit proposals for scientific articles that explore the intersection of gender equality and education.

This initiative aims to generate high-quality academic contributions that inform education policy, support decision-makers, and strengthen knowledge around girls’ and women’s education across African Union Member States.

Objectives of the Call

  • Promote the production and dissemination of scientific knowledge aligned with the AU’s four strategic areas.

  • Encourage critical reflection on the challenges and opportunities in girls’ and women’s education in Africa.

  • Support the development of evidence-based policy recommendations.

  • Foster innovation and collaboration among researchers.

  • Enrich the African research agenda on gender and education.

Thematic Areas

Submissions should focus on one or more of the following themes:

  • Gender-sensitive educational frameworks

  • Curriculum reform and teacher training

  • Innovative and inclusive approaches to girls’ education

  • Teacher training in gender-responsive pedagogy

  • Participation of girls and women in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics)

  • Education in emergencies and humanitarian contexts

  • Impact of conflict and crises on girls’ and women’s education

  • Strategies for inclusion and educational continuity in vulnerable settings

Eligibility Criteria

Submissions are welcome from:

  • Researchers and academics in social sciences, education, gender studies, and related disciplines

  • Master’s, doctoral, and post-doctoral students studying gender and education

  • African and international research institutions focused on gender equality and education in Africa

Submission Guidelines

  • Abstracts must be a maximum of 250 words

  • Full articles (upon selection) should be 3,000 to 6,000 words (excluding bibliography)

  • Submissions must be in English or French

  • Articles must be unpublished, adhere to academic standards, and include full references

  • Manuscripts should follow a rigorous methodology and be based on empirical data or case studies
