The Lloyd’s Register Foundation has announced a £2 million funding opportunity through its newly established Global Safety Evidence Centre, inviting proposals for research projects aimed at tackling critical safety challenges around the world.

This initiative aligns with the Foundation’s 2024–2029 strategy to engineer a safer world by generating and sharing high-quality safety evidence to inform global decision-making.

Objectives of the Funding Call

The funding call aims to support projects that:

  1. Address evidence gaps in occupational safety and health (OSH).

  2. Advance safety science, including methodologies for measuring and valuing safety and prevention.

  3. Facilitate learning from past safety successes and failures.

The Global Safety Evidence Centre is envisioned as a hub for collating, generating, and communicating the best available safety evidence to improve outcomes across sectors and geographies.

Focus Areas

Initially, the Centre will focus on two priority areas:

  • Safety Science: Integrating interdisciplinary knowledge to improve safety outcomes.

  • Safe Work: Developing evidence-based interventions to reduce workplace harm. This is informed by data such as the Lloyd’s Register Foundation World Risk Poll, which revealed that 18% of workers globally experienced harm at work in the past two years.

Eligibility and Application Process

The funding call is open to academic institutions, research organisations, non-profits, and industry partners worldwide.

  • Collaborative, cross-sector, and interdisciplinary proposals are strongly encouraged.

  • Projects should be up to two years in duration, with budgets typically ranging from £100,000 to £250,000.

Assessment Criteria

Proposals will be assessed based on:

  • Relevance to the Foundation’s strategic priorities

  • Clarity of the pathway to impact

  • Feasibility and methodological soundness

  • Achievability and affordability

  • Degree of stakeholder engagement

Benefits of the Programme

  1. Funding Support
Projects will receive between £100,000 and £250,000 over two years. Applicants with proposals outside this range are encouraged to contact the Foundation to discuss.

  2. Access to Networks and Expertise
Awardees will benefit from collaboration opportunities and insights from the Foundation’s global network.

  3. Support for Dissemination and Publicity
Assistance will be provided to share research findings broadly.

  4. Collaboration with Lloyd’s Register Foundation
Direct engagement with the Foundation’s initiatives and research priorities.
