Applications are now open for the Innovations for Poverty Action Peace & Recovery Initiative, funded by UK International Development.

The initiative supports projects that foster public good through the prevention of or response to social and political violence and humanitarian emergencies.

Particular areas of focus for prevention and response are international conflicts and civil wars; state-supported violence and repression, from mass killings to police brutality; violent and nonviolent collective action like riots, protests, and strikes; and intergroup violence, including ethnic and sectarian violence.

Areas of Research

The initiative expects participants to conduct research in at least one of the following areas:

–    understanding and prevention of individual – Level of participation in violence

–    Understanding, combating, and reintegrating non-state armed groups

–    Reducing prejudice and building horizontal social cohesion

–    Strengthening household and community resilience

–    Building institutions, resolving disputes, and delivering justice

–    Addressing root causes and preventing future crises:

Funding categories

The initiative has five categories of funding, including for preliminary research (up to $10,000), pilot studies (up to $75,000), and full studies ($500,000. maximum).

Others are infrastructure and public good creation (up to $250,000) and evidence use and policy outlook support grants ($25,000).

Who can apply?

–    An applicant or researcher must be affiliated with a university as a PhD candidate, assistant professor, professor, etc. Candidates who either hold a PhD or are currently pursuing a PhD in a relevant discipline can also apply.

–    The applying reaserch team must demonstrate experience conducting field research and applying impact evaluation methods in sectors that are relevant to the Peace & Recovery Initiative.

–    Exploratory grants are earmarked for LMIC-based researchers, junior faculty, PhD students and candidates, and other researchers who do not have significant sources of funding for travel and exploratory work.
