In the face of widespread hopelessness, negativity, and a significant exodus of young Nigerians seeking better opportunities abroad, Nigerian youths are being urged to adopt a more positive mindset towards the nation. This call to action was made during the official launch of “Organizing for a New Nigeria” (ONN), a flagship project of the New Nigeria campaign.

The event, organized by the Finishing Initiative for Sustainable Transformation (FIST Africa) and the Madiba Foundation, took place on May 30, 2024, in Abuja. Stakeholders emphasized that reorienting mindsets and believing in Nigeria’s potential to excel globally is crucial for the nation’s future.

The event focused on fostering an informed, active citizenry engaged with Nigeria’s socio-political environment. FIST Africa, a nongovernmental organization dedicated to community empowerment through education, advocacy, and social intervention programs, believes that small actions can lead to significant social change.

Frederick Adetiba, Executive Director of the Madiba Foundation, initiated the event by affirming the possibility of a new Nigeria if everyone works towards it. “ONN is a movement of passionate and active citizens committed to promoting development and good governance across various sectors. It connects those who love Nigeria and are willing to ensure it works for all,” Adetiba stated.

He outlined the ONN campaign’s goals to foster value orientation, behavioral change, and reduce negative behaviors such as pride. Emphasizing the need for increased civic engagement, Adetiba highlighted the importance of national pride and ownership in the new Nigeria project.

“Our aim is to harness the energy, skill, and creativity of active citizens, especially young people, to foster development and promote unity. We cannot have a new Nigeria without new Nigerians, civil and public servants, and politicians. This call to realize a new Nigeria is for everyone,” he added.

Olori Atuwatse III, Queen Consort of the Warri Kingdom, delivered an inspiring talk, urging youths to be proactive and embody the change they wish to see. “Do not complain about the darkness and problems of Nigeria; turn on the lights and be the change you want. Cultivate the value of active responsibility in building a new Nigeria,” she advised.

She emphasized that young people are leaders of today and must take responsibility now.

Ministers of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and Minister of State for Youth Development, Ayodele Oawande, shared their vision of an empowered youth in a new Nigeria. They called on the youth to contribute actively to their country’s development.

Mallam Lanre-Issa Onilu, Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), echoed the need for patriotism, stating that a functional new Nigeria is not an illusion.

During a panel discussion, participants agreed on the necessity of eliminating cultural crises and upholding true Nigerian culture and norms. They advocated for empowering local communities and bridging inequality gaps.

With the rise of artificial intelligence, young minds were encouraged to acquire tech skills, viewed as the next major opportunity.

The event concluded with the unveiling of the ONN logo by Lady Kemi Frederick Adetiba, Executive Director of FIST Africa. The unveiling was attended by dignitaries from civil society organizations, politicians, entrepreneurs, tech experts, students from various institutions, corps members, and guests.

Highlights included discussions on expectations for a new Nigeria, a question and answer session, and group photographs.
