As stories of toxic relationships and marriages continue to occupy the front burners daily, leading to gender-based violence, divorce, and most times broken homes, a lady has shared how she almost got blinded by her husband for wishing another man a happy birthday online.
The online user (name withheld) said she only posted and wished the fellow Facebook user identified as Charles Awuzie, well on his birthday due to his informative writings that have impacted her positively and prevented her from committing suicide as a result of her toxic marriage.
Showing off her maltreatment, she said: “This is what I get from my abusive husband just because I posted you and wished you a happy birthday on my Facebook profile.
“Sir, I have not known you from anywhere or met you in person, I only follow your teaching here.”
The user said she is in the web of an abusive marriage while expressing fears she is helpless and her life in danger.
“Your teachings helped me not to commit suicide one time ago due to what I was passing through in his hand in this marriage. My life is in danger; I feel helpless,” she expressed.
The United Nations says domestic abuse is the pattern of behavior in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner. This abuse is physical, sexual, emotional, economic, or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person. And it includes any behaviors that frighten, intimidate, terrorize, manipulate, hurt, humiliate, blame, injure, or wound someone.
In 2022, around 48,800 women and girls worldwide were killed by their intimate partners or other family members. This means that, on average, more than five women or girls are killed every hour by someone in their own family, according to data from UN Women.
While 55 percent of all female homicides are committed by intimate partners or other family members, only 12 percent of all male homicides are perpetrated in private.
Reacting to her ordeal, the Facebook male user she wished happy birthday – Charles Awuzie while condemning the abuse said “The impact of social media in marriages today is real… And it’s important we talk about it.”
